At one stage when we were trolling in close No 3 Ribbon, the 40m deep water was so clear we could see the bottom and the entire reef directly beneath the boat. During the day, we also tried fishing the one hundred fathom line, or Continental shelf. Depending on what type of sounder you carry this exercise can be something of a problem. For starters, 100 fathoms is deep! My Koden CVS 102 is supposed to have 200 watts RMS power output at the ?in between? frequency of 120 KHz. It also offers the choice of 40 and 10 degree beams on the transducer. However, with the gain flat out I could not get any return on the 40 degree beam at those sorts of depths. On the narrow beam the picture was adequate to show the bottom, but too weak to show fish. From the 100 fathom line, the bottom falls away very quickly. It is so marked that a simple zig zag about 50m either side of the 100 fathom line reveals the bottom rising and falling from 50 through to 100 fathoms. If, like me, you are used to fishing in just 25 fathoms of water, these numbers are mind numbing! Now Gov. Neil Abercrombie thinks it a good idea to tax this very same federal military pension because anyone over provided $75,000 AGI (couple) is a "wealthy" pensioner. Abercrombie says we should all share in the economic woes of the state, even though my military service was all over the world and my pension has nothing to do with the state of this state.
